Microsoft Dynamics and Intacct partner Brittenford Systems has released a new whitepaper to address the growing trend of outsourcing all or portions of the chief information officer function in small to midsize businesses given the growing complexity of information technology.

The whitepaper, entitled A Guide to CIO Advisory Services, identifies how CIO advisory services can improve the effectiveness of IT departments, along with four roles of the CIO: infrastructure, integration, intelligence and innovation. In addition, the next-generation CIO is described in the context of the 80/20 rule, aka the Pareto Principle.

The paper also addresses how to choose a virtual CIO and identifies strategy, domain expertise, resource augmentation and mentoring. Details on popular advisory services are provided, along with a CIO advisory services case study for a financial services firm.

“Given the growing interest in CIO Advisory Services, there is surprisingly little information available on the subject, so we decided to research and develop the topic for our clients and prospects,”  said Brittenford’s  managing director of CIO advisory services Ryan Risly.
