SwiftKey Keyboard

Most of the apps that achieve the prestigious distinction of being named one of our Apps of the Week are "productivity apps" -- tools that leverage your smartphone or tablet or other device to make you more efficient by taking notes more effectively or managing your time and to-do list better. This week's app goes straight to the heart of one of the main impediments to efficiency on smart devices: typing.

SwiftKey's SwiftKey Keyboard replaces the onscreen keyboard on your Android phone or tablet with a smarter, more responsive set of tools that include a predictive engine that learns from your writing habits, and a smart spacing feature that recognizes when you might have inadvertently combined two or more words. It supports over 60 languages, lets you personalize your color scheme, and, if you enable the SwiftKey Cloud feature, will save your predictive preferences across your devices, so the lessons it learns from what you type on your tablet can be applied to your phone, and vice versa.

One of its newest and most interesting features is SwiftKey Flow, a sort of "gestural" interface that moves you away from the old "hunt and peck" style of typing to a smoother, more gliding sort of interaction that's faster and, frankly, cooler. (You have to see it in action to understand, but trust us, it really is cool.)

SwiftKey Keyboard is an Android app, but the company also offers SwiftKey Note, which brings many of Keyboard's features to an iOS note-taking app.
