Microsoft is preparing for a delayed re-entry into the low-cost accounting market with the release of Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting software late next year. The company has issued a beta version of the product, code-named Magellan. Microsoft is looking for independent software vendors to build vertizal and horizontal applications on top of the software.

Rajat Taneja, general manager of small business applications, says, "We're targeting specifically businesses with about 10-to-20 employees." The company has not yet set a price for Magellan.
