Links between GoSystem Tax RS and document management applications are at the top of the list of what tax preparers want, according to RIA's annual survey of its tax preparation users. The survey found that professional tax preparers are looking for document management and workflow applications that integrate with their tax software to further streamline the tax preparation process.

As a result, the company established links to document management systems: File Cabinet CS from its sister company, Creative Solutions; GoFileRoom, which was recently purchased by CSI; and Documentum, not to mention a workflow solution from SurePrep.

"Everyone is pushing for paperless - that is why we selected [those vendors], because they cover the entire spectrum our clients use and want integration," says product manager Boyd Gackle.

It is probably a valuable feature, says one user. "They value our feedback and make changes during the year based on our feedback," says Jeffrey S. Parker, principal for Rothstein, Kass & Co., a firm that has used GoSystem since 1991.

Users can create separate PDFs for federal and state returns, and push the returns to the appropriate place within the document management system without having to open the application, saving time-consuming repeated data entry.

The integration with SurePrep's workflow application SurePrep Express is designed to help accounting firms significantly boost the volume of returns they can handle. The two companies entered an agreement in May to establish the links. That follows up their agreement two years earlier so that RIA's customers could utilize SurePrep's Outsourcing services.

"[SurePrep Express] takes the pro-forma numbers out of GoSystem and puts them into SurePrep Express for the next tax season without having to go out of either," says Gackle. "You can work between the two."

An important function of Express is its ability to sort source documents into Standard and Complex categories. Standard source documents, which have common line or box numbers such as W-2s and 1099s, can be sent to seasonal workers who have little or no training.

GoSystem is also being integrated with CSI's new UltraTax CS and Engagement CS packages, establishing two-way links between the packages that enable accountants to make adjustments in the tax software.

The company also reports that its RS To-Go is receiving a good reception.

"[It's] mainly because of security concerns and Sarbanes-Oxley," says Gackle.

He explains that with the focus on security and controls mandated by the federal legislation, many GoSystem preparers are seeking alternatives to working at sites where clients will not let them access the Internet-based RS via their office systems.

RS To-Go enables preparers to download returns from GoSystem Tax RS to laptops, and then upload the returns when they resume Internet access.

Security as well as remote accessibility is also important to Rothstein, Kass. The Roseland, N.J.-based firm has 475 employees in seven offices in the U.S. and the Cayman Islands.

"One of the things we like best is the remote access and being able to have multiple users in the return at the same time," Parker says.
