KPMG commemorated the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with its “Service in Remembrance” nationwide volunteer campaign, serving 227 nonprofits through the program and more than 140 others through individual employee volunteerism.

Thousands of KPMG employees at more than 85 KPMG offices were granted “volunteer time off” to serve their local nonprofits in support of the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

“We look forward to being a part of something extraordinary, as the KPMG family proudly joins millions of Americans in support of the National Day of Service,” said KPMG LLP chairman and CEO John Veihmeyer.

So far, KPMG’s efforts have included:

•    More than 100 New York volunteers visiting PS 161 in Harlem for a book reading and to hand out books to the children as part of KPMG’s Families for Literacy program.

•    A wreath-laying ceremony at the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in Washington, D.C., attended by nearly 70 KPMG staff. The presentation of a mock check represented the $100,000 KPMG and its Washington, D.C.-area employees donated to the Pentagon Memorial Fund over the past six years.

•    In Chicago, 300 firm partners and employees created 17 in-classroom libraries and a student garden for students of Phoebe Hearst Elementary.

On Friday, Sept. 9, 30 KPMG and New York Says Thank You volunteers headed to Joplin, Mo., as part of the National 9/11 Flag Tour’s final 10th anniversary commemoration, which pays tribute to the people impacted by the tornado in May, before the flag is placed in its permanent home in the 9/11 memorial.
