Utah Accounting Grad Programs Celebrate Ranking

October 26, 2009

When it comes to accounting at Utah State University, graduate students have earned USU a national top ranking – eighth to be exact.

The list ranks the percentage of graduate students who pass the CPA exam on their first try, according to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. Students who have earned a master’s degree in accounting must pass the nationally administered uniform CPA exam before they can be licensed as accountants. The NASBA ranks universities across the country based on what percentage of graduate students pass all sections of the exam.

USU ranked eighth with a 71 percent passing rate. In 2008, USU’s Huntsman School of Business students were ranked fifth in the country with 80 percent of its students passing.

Still the school sees it as a win.

“This is a significant accomplishment that for two consecutive years Utah State University has been in the top 10,” said Larry Walther, head of the School of Accountancy. “There are only three schools that have been in the top 10 for two consecutive years.”

Brigham Young University ranked No. 1 with 84 percent of its students passing the test.
