Two More Universities Offer Tax Help

February 4, 2010

Accounting students at the University of Maine and Wilkes University in Pennsylvania are providing free tax assistance to the public with those with low to moderate incomes.

The service at Wilkes University will be offered Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in room 105 of Breiseth Hall, 137 South Franklin Street in Wilkes-Barre. It is part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which offers help to those who make a yearly household income of $49,000. Both spouses must be present for taxpayers who are married and filing joint returns.

For more information on the Wilkes University service call 1-88-WILKES-U ext. 4710.

Over at UMaine, the experience isn’t just about helping the taxpayers, it’s a learning experience for the students as well. “Being able to talk with the person one-on-one gives that perspective that you can’t get in a classroom,” said UMaine Professor Steven Colburn, who coordinates the program.

To learn more about the services offered at UMaine, call Colburn at 207-581-1982.
