Winners named in KPMG, Ascend national case competition

What’s it take to launch a new retail store in China? A team of five students found out during the inaugural case competition developed by Ascend, the organization for accounting and finance professionals of Asian and Pacific Islander descent and KPMG.

The winning team consisted of Chen Lina and Yujing Feng from Fordham University, Marianne Foo from Drexel University, Shuyi Guo from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Rabiya Hass from Queens College.

Thirty students representing 16 colleges and universities throughout the country formed six teams participating in the competition. Their goal: to analyze technical accounting issues and address managerial, corporate, operating and sustainability concerns to develop an implementation strategy for a new retail store concept in China. The teams prepared a 20 minute preparation of their analysis and recommendations to the panel of judges.

KPMG awarded each member $500. The runner-up team members – Rick Li from California State University in Los Angeles, Hang Lin from Queens College, Ankit Mody from Barach College, Tina Yiming Pan from Pace University and Guerlain Pantaleon from Fordham University all received $300 for their efforts.

KPMG also sponsors case study competitions with the National Association of Black Accountants and the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance & Accounting.
