CAE offers 1st annual symposium to advance African Americans in accounting

Today marks the beginning of a two-day program to advance African-Americans in accounting held at the Doubletree Hotel in Washington D.C.

The Symposium on Upward Mobility and Retention within the Accounting Profession is being sponsored by Howard University School of Business’ Center for Accounting Education [CAE]. The event is open to all professionals “with a desire, and in a position, to influence change within their organization and across the accounting profession.”

The symposium will kick off with a presentation from a research study sponsored by CAE which will be the basis for a panel discussion. Leaders in the profession such as Ken Bouyer, Americas Director of Inclusiveness Recruiting at Ernst & Young, Kathy Hannah, national managing partner at KPMG, Gregory Johnson, executive director at the National Association of Black Accountants and Gail Pitts, the chair of the Minority Initiatives Committee at the AICPA, will be among those in attendance.

Leaders will discuss solutions and execution plans that will revolve around four topics – pre-college efforts, college years, retention and upward mobility.

The objective of the symposium is to establish clear actions and an accountability model so that the ideas, practices and solutions discussed can continue to be prioritized and implemented after the event takes place.
