Virginia Tech accounting student stabbed and killed

January 26, 2009

Accounting Tomorrow extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and classmates of Xin Yang, 22, an accounting student at Virginia Tech who was decapitated on Jan. 21.

Yang was killed by another student, 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu of Ningbo, China, with a kitchen knife in a campus café. The two had known each other, according to police reports, and was listed as an emergency contact on her records.

Haiyang and Xin had been having coffee in a café in the Graduate

Center, where Xin was living. About seven other people who were in the coffee shop told police that the two hadn't been arguing before the attack. Police received two 911 calls shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to reports.

Haiyang was charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond. Police said though he knew the victim, no motive for the slaying has been determined. Haiyang was studying to receive a doctorate in agricultural and applied economics.

Xin had arrived in Blacksburg, Va. on Jan. 8.

The stabbing was the first killing on campus since a mass killing there in 2007, when a student gunman shot 32 people and then took his own life
