AICPA accepting applications for Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop

The American Institute of CPAs announced that applications for the Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop are now being accepted.

The two-day workshop, now in its 20th year, is an annual invitational program for future CPA minority accounting students and features speakers, panel discussions and interactive programs to strengthen attendees’ professional skills and promote the CPA credential.

Session topics include acing the CPA exam, navigating corporate culture, financial literacy, and thinking like an entrepreneur.

“The AICPA’s Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop is an excellent opportunity for minority accounting majors to hear first-hand what a career in the CPA profession entails,” stated Kim Drumgo, AICPA director of diversity and inclusion and vice chair of the National Commission on Diversity and Inclusion. “Armed with enhanced insight into the profession and skills built through training sessions, students emerge from the Workshop with a better understanding of where their CPA license can take them and the necessary steps to get there.”

“The Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop provided me with an opportunity to learn more about a career in the accounting profession, while connecting with many passionate students from across the country,” stated Matthew Calima, a business administration major with an accounting concentration at California State University, Dominguez Hills, who attended the Workshop in 2013.

The AICPA covers the cost of student attendees’ transportation, hotel accommodation and meals for the all-expenses-paid event.

The workshop is open to ethnic minorities who: are a sophomore, junior, senior, 5th year or graduate student, have declared a major in accounting, finance or tax with intent to pursue the CPA credential, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, are actively involved in campus and community activities, and are a student affiliate member of the AICPA and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
