SBS volunteers help kick off summer Special Olympics

Employees of technology consulting firm SBS Group volunteered during the Special Olympics of New Jersey opening ceremony June 10 that kicked off the 2011 Summer Games.

The two-day event hosts athletes competing in aquatics, bocce, gymnastics, power lifting, softball, tennis and track and field. SBS staff joined 3,000 volunteers and assisted with souvenir sales.

The Special Olympics of New Jersey is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round sports training and competition in 24 sports for more than 22,000 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The opening ceremony includes a parade of 2,500 athletes and their coaches, followed by an address by special guests and dignitaries. This year, members of the law enforcement community carried the Olympics torch into the arena and lit the cauldron to officially open the games.

“SBS has always been committed to supporting organizations that work to improve the lives of others,” said SBS Group President James R. Bowman in a statement. “The Special Olympics Summer Games is an incredible event that empowers young people with disabilities. I am proud of the participation of my SBS team in this worthy cause. We were so moved by the event that, among a host of other SBS Group community-outreach programs, we plan to expand our participation with the Special Olympics in the near future.”
