The foundation of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants announced today that it awarded $254,500 to 92 recipients of the AICPA Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students for the 2010-11 academic year. The scholarship is funded by the AICPA Foundation, Robert Half International and the New Jersey Society of CPAs.
Since its creation in 1969, the scholarship program has awarded approximately $14.6 million in its goal to increase ethnic diversity in the profession. This year, recipients hail from 71 schools in 30 states and will be awarded in a range of $1,500 to $3,000. Georgia State University, the University of Florida and the University of Texas-Austin lead the pack with four recipients each. Twenty-eight of the awardees are pursuing their bachelor’s degrees and 64 are enrolled in graduate-level programs in accounting.
To be eligible, students must have successfully completed at least 30 semester hours in college coursework, maintained a minimum 3.3 GPA and intend to pursue the CPA license. Students are chosen based on academic achievement, leadership and commitment to pursuing CPA licenses, according to the foundation.
Recipients are also invited to attend the annual Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop in the spring.
