The American Institute of CPAs has given its inaugural Personal Financial Planning Lifetime Achievement Award to Stanley H. Breitbard for his practice area development and work improving national financial literacy.
Former AICPA chair Stu Kessler presented the award to the Los Angeles resident at the institute’s 2011 Advanced Personal Financial Planning Conference in Las Vegas. The award was created to honor exemplary contributions to the accounting profession and the AICPA in the financial planning sphere.
Recipients must have worked in personal financial planning for at least 25 years and have contributed to the AICPA for at least 15. They must also exhibit “unquestioned integrity and professionalism and exemplify the personal, ethical and professional characteristics of the model CPA financial advisor,” according to the institute.
Breitbard received the AICPA’s personal financial planning division’s distinguished service award while serving as the first chairman of the committee in 1993. He has also served on the institute’s financial literacy commission.
“Stan, who is known as the father of financial planning, literally created the mold for CPA financial planning and has worked with unwavering passion the past 25 years to make CPA financial planners the premier advisors in this field,” said James Metzler, AICPA vice president for small firm interests. “No one is more deserving of the first personal financial planning lifetime achievement award. Stan’s contributions to both the practice and the CPA profession truly are immeasurable.”
Breitbard became partner at Price Waterhouse in 1974, serving as national director of personal financial services from 1983-94.
He co-authored The Price Waterhouse Book of Personal Financial Planning and The Price Waterhouse Personal Financial Adviser and has lectured about personal financial planning at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, Los Angeles.
After retiring, Breitbard co-founded the California Jump$tart Coalition, a nonprofit focusing on personal finance education for kindergarten-through-12th graders.
Breitbard holds a degree in English and an MBA in accounting from the University of California, Berkeley. He is licensed as a CPA in California and New York.
