Baylor accounting students on record-breaking mission to dance their way to Uganda

Baylor University students are asking faculty, fellow students and Central Texas residents to save them a dance—or over 1,000, if they accomplish their goal of setting a Guinness World Record for world’s largest Zumba class in an effort to send Baylor accounting students on a vocational mission trip to Uganda this summer.

The accounting department of Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business organized the event for Thursday, when they hope to break the University of South Carolina’s record and welcome 1,135 people to dance on campus. The date coincides with Baylor’s annual Diadeloso (or “Day of the Bear”) holiday.

Participants will pay a $5 registration, or $10 on the day of the event, titled Bear Zumba, to participate in the class. Zumba is a popular Latin-inspired dance-fitness program created in 2001.

The money raised will help fund the Uganda mission trip May 16-27, during which students will work with Uganda Christian University and Compassion International to consult for small businesses and churches in the country. The students also hope to provide venture capital or small business loans through their fundraising.

"This trip is about equipping and encouraging God's people for His glory,” Baylor senior Doug Kimball, set to make his third mission trip, told Baylor University. “I hope this trip encourages students to view their future business careers as much more than making money and earning a title.”

The event is sponsored by Pollei DesignWorks, Ernst & Young, W-Promotions, Deloitte, PKF (Pannell Kerr Foster), KPMG and Joy's Dance Studio.
