Boy Scouts council dedicates shooting range to late CPA

The Indian Waters Council of the Boy Scouts of America hosted a dedication ceremony July 13 to celebrate the opening of The Randy Scott Memorial Shooting Range at Camp Barstow in honor of the founder of Scott and Company CPAs.

Scott, who was killed in a car accident in January 2012, was a member of the Indian Waters Council’s executive board and served in multiple officer roles including council president. As president, he eliminated $350,000 in operating debt and raised more than $1 million in cash and gifts-in-kind for the council’s capital campaign.

Funding for the shooting range, which sits along the Lake Murray banks of the 300-acre Midlands summer camp, came from community contributions made in Scott’s honor and matching contributions from the South Carolina audit and assurance, tax and consulting firm he founded, Scott and Company CPAs. The range was officially opened with comments from Indian Waters chief executive Doug Stone and Scott family members, followed by a ceremonial “first shot” by the family.

“Randy Scott recognized and believed in the mission of the Indian Waters Council of the Boy Scouts of America to provide quality youth programs designed to strengthen character, develop good citizenship, and promote physical fitness,” stated Stone. “Realizing his vision of opening this shooting range at Camp Barstow is a happy day for all of us who knew, loved and appreciated him so much.”

More than 6,600 young men are scouts with the Indian Waters Council.

“Randy was a charismatic and visionary leader of both our firm and of our community for many years, and we certainly miss him and his many contributions,” said Don Mobley, managing member of Scott and Company’s Columbia office, in a statement. “He believed strongly in giving back and helping others, and we are proud that Camp Barstow’s shooting range will bear his name in perpetuity as a visible symbol of his contributions to Scouting and his belief in the inherent goodness of young people everywhere.”
