J.H. Cohn Golf Invitational raises $150K for charity

The foundation of accounting and consulting firm J.H. Cohn recently donated $150,000 to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, two Cohn for Kids-supported charities, at its 21st Annual Charity Golf Invitational June 11.

This year’s event, which had raised a combined total of more than $1 million for the two organizations over the past six outings, was sponsored by Capital One Bank, Epstein, Becker & Green and Lord Abbett.

Operated through the J.H. Cohn Foundation, Cohn for Kids supports children in need, ranging from young to college-aged. SOWF aids children of Special Operations personnel who were killed in an operational mission or training accident by providing them with college scholarship grants, financial aid and educational counseling.

Accepting the award on behalf of SOWF was Major General James C. McCombs, U.S. Air Force, who retired as Deputy Commander in Chief and Chief of Staff at the United States Special Operations Command MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, in April 1997, after 35 years of distinguished military service.

The Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation strives to end the cycle of domestic violence and loss of life through the Margaret’s Place program, school-wide anti-violence campaigns, developmental workshops on coping and leadership skills, and educational forums for school faculty and parents.

Chairman and founder of the foundation Joe Torre appeared at the event to participate in this year’s $10,000 shoot-out competition, sign baseballs and bats, pose for pictures, and speak about the foundation.

J.H. Cohn partner and CEO Thomas J. Marino and Michael L. Cohen, office managing partner in Roseland and J.H. Cohen Foundation director, presented the checks. Cohen was also in turn awarded the inaugural Michael L. Cohen Award, to be given annually to a firm employee or partner who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to their community.

"We are incredibly proud of how our golf invitational has become a signature event for our clients and friends in the business community, but, most of all, we take pride in the impact the funds raised have had on two very special charities," Cohen said in a statement.

The event was led by master of ceremonies Steve Adubato, Emmy Award-winning PBS anchor, media analyst, author, university professor and motivational speaker, and featured a Titleist tent, nine closest-to-the pin prizes, team prizes, a silent auction of more than 25 items, and a live auction.
