KPMG partnered with the career-themed academy network the National Academy Foundation and human resource-development organization Ceridian to provide career planning skills to Staten Island students at the Susan E. Wagner High School Academy of Finance May 1.
The visit included tips on resume writing, interviewing skills and dressing for success.
“The event challenged the students to think about how their career aspirations align with their personal interests and strengths,” stated Eric Riso, partner in KPMG’s New York office and board member of NAF’s NYC academies. “It also made the students focus on the dynamic world we live in and that they should expect to experience dramatic changes in the way work will be done during their careers over the next 25 to 30 years.”
In addition to a general education, NAF students, most of whom come from lower income families, get the opportunity to learn about specific careers in finance, hospitality, engineering, information technology or health science. The career development event was split into two sessions of roughly 25 high school juniors.
“The event really went well, it was an interactive session with students in their junior year focusing on planning for college and a career,” said KPMG senior associate Kimberlee Rossi in a statement. “Several student volunteers even got to perform in front of their classmates demonstrating the do’s and don’ts of interviewing… These students really seemed focused on planning for their career and future. We hope to definitely work with this school and academy again in the future.”
