Maine accounting students get hands-on with IRS VITA program

Aspiring accountants from Husson University in Maine are volunteering to help individuals file their state and federal taxes through the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Program.

Open to local area residents and Husson University students needing assistance, the free program encourages taxpayers to bring receipts, W-2s and necessary documents to file their returns at the university’s Bangor campus, with no appointments necessary.

“This is a great opportunity for students majoring in accounting to get ‘hands-on’ experience working with clients and filing taxes,” stated Dewey Martin, director of the School of Accounting at Husson University. “Our curriculum emphasizes experiential learning. Helping others prepare their taxes not only provides our accounting students with a valuable learning opportunity, it also helps them understand the client consultative process necessary in any professional practice.”

The IRS Taxpayer Program is open Saturday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between now and the April 15 deadline in Room 256 of Peabody Hall.
