AICPA banking conference marks 40th Anniversary in Maryland

As banking has transformed over the last four decades - a period that includes the savings & loan crisis, the deepest recession since the Great Depression, a wave of mergers, regulatory changes, and the rise of online banking - CPAs have been able to keep pace with change, thanks in part to the guidance and industry-specific insight to professionals of the AICPA's National Conference on Banks and Savings Institutions.

This year, the conference celebrates its 40th anniversary, with in-depth coverage of accounting, financial reporting, auditing and tax developments on the banking industry. The event will be held Sept. 16-18 at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md.

“This conference has proven its value over time,” stated Sydney Garmong, a partner at Crowe Horwarth and chair of the conference planning committee. “It’s critical to hear the latest developments from federal regulators and standard-setters, as well as to address such timeless topics as the allowance for loan and lease losses.”

Key speakers at the conference include:

  • Business thinker Vijay Govindarajan, who will talk about trends and disruptors affecting the banking industry, as well as strategies for thriving in the future
  • Larry Smith of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, who will address the latest changes underway for accounting and financial reporting, including the FASB’s current expected credit loss model
  • Chief accountants of the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Federal Reserve and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, who will discuss the regulatory environment
  • Douglas G. Duncan, chief economist at Fannie Mae, who will discuss housing trends
  • Marci Rossell, former CNBC chief economist, who will talk about economic trends
