More than 800 CPAs and their colleagues participated in Pennsylvania’s inaugural
Gov. Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania General Assembly also supported these volunteering efforts by recognizing May 17-23 as CPA Week of Service in Pennsylvania through proclamations and resolutions.
“The impact certified public accountants make in the business world is significant, which is not surprising considering that there are more than 22,000 members of the PICPA,” stated Jerry Maginnis, who volunteers as PICPA president. “But what may come as a surprise to some is that CPAs have a passion for more than just numbers. Supporting charities and community organizations is in the DNA of Pennsylvania CPAs. After all, accounting is a service-minded profession.”
Volunteers organized and packed donations at 13 food banks or community pantries; cooked meals and provided laundry kits to residents at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House; taught financial literacy lessons at four schools; cooked 40 meals for residents at Safe Harbor Homeless Shelter; painted and prepared offices and other spaces with Habitat for Humanity; helped with registration and organizing donations for Walk Now for Autism Speaks; inventoried a community improvement center for the United Way; cleaned up two camps and an animal shelter; and much more.
To further demonstrate the profession’s commitment to community service, PICPA offered all volunteers a chance to win a $1,000 donation to a charity of their choice. This year, Ruthann Woll, manager in the tax services group with Reinsel Kuntz Lesher LLP in Bernville, Pa., was the lucky winner. Woll chose to donate the money to the American Cancer Society, Berks County Unit.
