NJSCPA awards $460,000 in scholarships

The New Jersey Society of CPAs’ Scholarship Fund, the largest professional scholarship program in the state, will award more than $460,000 to high school and college students this year.

“With the cost of college education increasing annually in the U.S. and in New Jersey, it's more important than ever to support deserving Garden State high school and college students in their pursuit of an accounting education,” said Ralph Thomas, NJSCPA CEO and executive director, in a statement. “When you take the long view, our assistance to students helps them, helps the profession and benefits the public at large.”

Many of the award recipients, a total of 21 high school and 62 college students, and their families will be honored at the 53rd Annual Scholarship Award Ceremony April 25 at Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel in Iselin, giving them the opportunity to network with CPAs from the state’s leading accounting firms.

The NJSCPA will begin accepting applications for its 2014 scholarship program in the fall. The scholarship categories and qualifications are:

The High School Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to high school seniors who plan to major in accounting. It is based on academic standing, standardized test scores and an essay. The scholarships are presented over four years, ranging in value from $6,500 to $10,000.

The College Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to college juniors majoring in accounting who are entering their senior year and seniors who are entering an accounting-related graduate program. It is based on recommendations, transcripts, essay and an interview. Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $5,000.

The Minority Scholarship Programs, which are supported by the NJSCPA in conjunction with the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. These programs are open to college students at the junior and senior levels.
