NYSSCPA kicks off 2013 Habitat for Humanity fundraising campaign

New York State Society of CPAs members launched their 2013 campaign to raise $75,000 worth of building materials for a local Habitat for Humanity home through the second annual Sand Volleyball Tournament Saturday, Jan. 5.

CPAs from several Rochester-area accounting firms have been invited to play in the six-on-six tournament at the Hot Shots Volleyball Club. The tournament, along with other events the group is planning this year, will help the NYSSCPA build a Habitat home in Rochester by Fall 2013.

“We look for projects that involve community service, education and training, networking, and further exposure to the Rochester business group. This project has almost all of those,” stated Matt Taylor, chair of the Rochester Chapter Young CPAs Committee.

Participating accountants, and matching funds from their firms, will work to raise money for building materials to help Rochester’s Flower City Habitat for Humanity.

Flower City Habitat works with the city of Rochester to select vacant lots where homes are built over several days with volunteers, fundraisers and new homeowner families lending support. Low-income families then purchase the homes through a zero-interest, 30-year mortgage, and in turn provide 450 hours of sweat equity toward their and other Habitat homes.
