PwC kicks off Summer of Service with Boston Celebrates

More than 1,600 Boston PwC employees took part in the office-wide Boston Celebrates day June 22, working on various projects with 14 Massachusetts nonprofits at the Seaport World Trade Center.

Split into teams, employees participated in a variety of community service activities that included filling 2,500 backpacks with resources for underserved and sick children, families and the homeless and helping high school students with resume writing and job preparation.

“PwC Boston believes in and supports the Commonwealth of Massachusetts – its people, businesses, schools and charitable organizations,” said Barry Nearhos, Northeast managing partner at PwC, in a statement. “We are dedicated to making a difference where it matters most and supporting a culture of giving back. The goal of our Boston Celebrates day is to applaud our amazing staff, inspire action and instill pride in our local community.”

At a celebration following the community service projects, eight-time Olympic medal winner and author Apolo Ohno spoke and the firm recognized the 350 Boston employees who have been promoted over the past year.

The event kicked off PwC’s annual Summer of Service, which gives every staff member the opportunity to select one day to volunteer at a nonprofit of their choice. PwC Boston contributed more than $700,000 paid employee hours to volunteerism in fiscal year 2011.
