TSCPA students win minority, John L. Carey scholarships

Three Texas Society of CPAs student members have been honored with two different accounting scholarships.

The TSCPA/American Institute of CPAs 2011-12 Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students was bestowed to Minhchau Nguyen of the University of Houston and James Henshall from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi. Part of AICPA’s Legacy Scholars program, the scholarship awards full-time undergraduate and graduate minority students while encouraging the choice of accounting as a major, entry into the profession and attainment of a CPA license.

Additionally, TSCPA member Brendon Wenzel of San Antonio was one of 10 students awarded the 2011-12 AICPA John L. Carey Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to liberal arts and non-business degree students pursuing both graduate studies in accounting and the CPA license and was established to honor AICPA retiree Carey.

Carey served the AICPA for 40 years as administrative vice president, executive director, and as editor and publisher of the Journal of Accountancy.

The scholarship, intended to encourage students with little or no previous accounting education to consider the profession, is in the amount of $5,000.
