Candidates Poke Fun at 9-9-9 Tax Plan

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain saw his rising numbers in the latest tracking polls reflected in the swipes that rival candidates took at his tax proposals.

Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, has proposed what he dubs the “9-9-9 plan,” providing a flat tax of 9 percent on business income, individual income and a national sales tax. Other candidates are beginning to dismiss the plan as overly simplistic.

During a debate Tuesday night at Dartmouth College sponsored by Bloomberg and the Washington Post, fellow candidate Jon Huntsman, a former ambassador to China and Utah governor, joked, “I thought it was the price of a pizza when I first heard about it.”

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., made a Book of Revelations reference, saying, “When you take the 9-9-9 plan and you turn it upside down, I think the devil is in the details.”

Perhaps the 9-9-9 plan could become the basis for the next sequel to “The Omen” or “National Treasure.”
