Fujitsu’s New Scanner Doesn’t Need a Computer

By Michael Cohn
January 14, 2013

Fujitsu has introduced a new model of its ScanSnap scanner line that allows accountants to use a tablet or other mobile device to do a quick scan without powering on a PC or Mac.

The Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 document scanner handles up to 25 double-sided pages per minute with the help of a built-in chip that takes on the job of image processing so upside-down images are automatically rotated and crooked pictures are straightened.

It’s able to wirelessly connect to a router or a mobile device via Wi-Fi so users can start a scan with their smart phone or tablet. It works with iOS devices like the Apple iPhone or iPad or Google Android smartphones or tablets with the help of a ScanSnap Connect app that can be downloaded from iTunes or Google Play. The documents can be saved as PDF or JPEG graphics files.

“In the old days, you’d have to power on your PC, wait for it to boot up, get the connection, stand over your PC, connect to your email, send it off to your email, and then it would be waiting for you,” said Fujitsu product marketing manager Michael Sidejas. “Now that’s all been eliminated. All you do is just lift the lid on the scanner, put the document in, push the button, and it immediately goes to your mobile device. We’re talking like 7 or 8 seconds. You close the lid and you walk out the door. You don’t even have to power on your PC.”

That can be handy during tax season if you need to quickly scan in documents like receipts, invoices and tax forms while you’re on the go.
