The Fastest-Growing Firms
Our annual Top 100 Firms report not only ranks the largest accounting firms in the U.S. by revenue, but also by which grew the fastest.
While 2010 was a tough year for the Top 100, with 44 of them reporting flat or declining revenues, a number managed to achieve growth that was respectable – in some cases, highly respectable. In some cases the growth is due to significant mergers or acquisitions, but in others, it’s purely organic.
Here, ranked by increase in net revenue, are the growth leaders from 2010.
1. Gallina
2010 net revenues: $30.75 mn
Growth: 31.25%
Headquarters: Roseville, Calif.
Managing partner: Larry Taylor
The fastest-growing of the Top 100, Gallina achieved blistering growth of over 31 percent – and its first appearance on the T100 list – through mergers with two separate firms, one based in Sacramento, Calif., and one in Las Vegas. Both complemented Gallina in terms of services offered and the geographies they represented – which is hardly surprising, since both were run by former Gallina alumni.
2. O’Connor Davies Munns & Dobbins
2010 net revenues: $64.75 mn
Growth: 27.96%
Headquarters: New York City
Managing partner: Kevin Keane
2011 marks ODMD’s 120th anniversary, and the firm prepared for it in style: racking up close to 28 percent growth in 2010, not least through a merger with PKF New York, and adding 17 partners and a number of high-level senior managers with significant niche expertise.
3. Doeren Mayhew
2010 net revenues: $43.70 mn
Growth: 21.09%
Headquarters: Troy, Mich.
Managing partner: Mark Crawford
Long one of the largest single-office firms in the country, Doeren Mayhew became a two-office firm and ensured strong growth through its July 2010 merger with Houston-based T.R. Moore, which will significantly boost its energy-industry business.
4. Blue & Co.
2010 net revenues: $50.50 mn
Growth: 20.24%
Headquarters: Carmel, Ind.
Managing partner: Douglas Hasler
In 2010, Indiana powerhouse Blue & Co. merged in two small tax practices and created a partnership with an IT firm to delivery tech consulting services, but much of its strong growth was no doubt a result of its late-2009 merger with Kentucky-based Potter & Co.
5. Rosen Seymour Shapss Martin & Co.
2010 net revenues: $49.60 mn
Growth: 17.81%
Headquarters: New York City
Managing partner: Martin Greenberg
The second of three NYC-based firms to make the top 10, RSSM expanded its M&A consulting practice in 2010, and in early 2011, merged in Kahn, Hoffman & Hochman.
6. Citrin Cooperman & Co.
2010 net revenues: $100 mn
Growth: 17.65%
Headquarters: New York City
Managing partner: Joel Cooperman
Citrin Cooperman did no fewer than six different deals in 2010, as it continued its strategy of moving from being an NYC-area firm to becoming a regional power, from Connecticut to Philadelphia.
7. Honkamp Krueger & Co.
2010 net revenues: $31.48 mn
Growth: 13.93%
Headquarters: Dubuque, Iowa
Co-managing partners: Arnie Honkamp and Greg Burbach
The fastest-growing in the Midwest, Iowa-based HK is unique not just in achieving its strong growth rate entirely organically – in large part through a strong emphasis on client outreach — but also in its focus on financial planning, which accounts for almost 40 percent of revenue. What’s more, it offers its financial planning services through over 80 other accounting firms.
8. Argy, Wiltse & Robinson
2010 net revenues: $50 mn
Growth: 13.87%
Headquarters: McLean, Va.
Managing partner: Paul Argy
Virginia-based Argy Wiltse was the fastest-growing firm in both the Capitol Region and the Southeast. Notable moves in 2010 included expanding its Fort Lauderdale, Fla., office, and co-founding a Public Contracting Institute.
9. Nigro Karlin Segal & Feldstein
2010 net revenues: $41.09 mn
Growth: 13.67%
Headquarters: Los Angeles
Managing partner: Mickey Segal
California-based Nigro Karlin, which moved its offices to Westwood in 2010, saw the fastest growth in its forensics and fraud services, and among its entertainment clients.
10. Weaver
2010 net revenues: $65.30 mn
Growth: 12.39%
Headquarters: Fort Worth, Texas
Managing partner: Tommy Lawler
By far the largest non-national firm in the Southwest, Weaver continued its strategy of expansion in 2010 through a number of deals, including entering the Midland/Odessa market through a merger with Elms Farris.
