Small Business Owners Can Get Free Tax Prep

Online bookkeeping service IAC-EZ is offering one month’s free use of its online software and free tax filing for a few lucky small business entrepreneurs.

The company said that it is playing Cupid in February to 14 small business owners who are the first to sign up online for its service at www.iacez.com to receive what it calls a special Valentine gift: free use of its software and free tax filing. The company normally sells its service for $19.95 per month.

The software is targeted at freelancers and independent contractors who have been forced into self-employment by today’s massive corporate layoffs. Another company that targets a similar market, Outright.com, announced $2 million in financing this week (see Online Bookkeeping Service Gets $2 Million in Funding).

Heather Villa, a certified management accountant and Intuit QuickBooks Certified Pro Advisor, founded IAC-EZ. “The economic downturn is driving more and more people into business for themselves,” she said in a statement. “So I developed a Web-based application that is extremely straightforward and allows self-employed individuals and small-business owners to manage their own books without having to struggle, spend money or learn complex skills.”

The 14 winners have until March 14 to enter all their expenses and income online with the help of IAC-EZ's wizard, Mr. Networth, in order to have their taxes prepared for free and submitted by the April 15 deadline as well.

Winners who cannot make the deadline for entering data can still apply for an extension to have their taxes submitted after the tax deadline. Residents of California and Oregon are excluded from the offer because of restrictive local tax laws.
