CCH has begun publishing some of its most popular accounting and tax books as eBooks, allowing readers to be able to store them on desktop and laptop computers, as well as Apple iPads and iPhones.
Among the books is the CCH U.S. Master Tax Guide, and CCHs eight-volume set of Tax Code laws and IRS regulations, along with reference guides on state taxes, sales and use taxes, accounting, auditing, finance and estate planning. The eBooks will be priced exactly the same as the print editions.
The eBooks use Adobes Digital Editions format and require users to download the free Adobe software to their computers. For an iPad or iPhone, users can download an app called Bluefire Reader from Bluefire Productions to read the eBooks.
CCH also plans to offer support for the Amazon Kindle e-reader, according to director of product management and marketing Sue Nolan, and is in the final negotiation stages. However, there are no plans right now to support Google Android devices like Barnes & Nobles new Nook Color tablet. There are also no plans right now to bundle the content with any devices.
What our customers are telling us is that the value is in the content and what kinds of content we can offer, said Nolan.
When the eBook content is updated significantly, CCH plans to notify users by e-mail that a more current version is available and they can then download the latest version, according to channel manager Sarah Helvie. CCH is initially not allowing sharing of the content between users.
What we are allowing is actually a significant amount of copying and printing of the content, said Helvie. On most of our titles you will be able to print up to 25 pages a week, which is significantly higher than what you will see out there in the rest of industry. Its the same for copying and pasting. The other thing that theyre able to do is read the content on up to six devices that have the same Adobe Digital Editions license. Thus, users who have a home computer, office computer, iPad and iPhone and two other devices or computers can store the content on all of them, but they need to be running the same Adobe license.
