IRS Swamped by Tax Filings

Washington, D.C. (March 5, 2013)

By Michael Cohn

The Internal Revenue Service said Tuesday that its Modernized e-File Production system is taking longer to generate federal acknowledgments for tax return filings.

The IRS said the situation “may continue throughout the remainder of the day as receipts increase” of tax returns. On Monday, the IRS announced that it was ready to accept a large group of individual and business tax forms that had previously been delayed (see IRS Allows Remaining Tax Forms to Be Filed). Last week, it had warned transmitters to only send their stockpiled inventory of tax returns they have held back this tax season, evenly spread throughout the day while it was testing the system on Sunday (see IRS Plans to Enable Remaining Tax Forms to be Filed).

The late passage by Congress of the fiscal cliff legislation on New Year's Day delayed the start of tax season until late January this year.

The IRS said Tuesday that it is working on the MeF system as a top priority and would issue a Technical QuickAlert once it is resolved.  “Please monitor the MeF Status page for any updates throughout the day,” the IRS added. “Thank you for your patience and support.”

I need some advice on how to proceed with receiving a CP2000 from the IRS for under stating my income for a 1099-C I NEVER received. It is from Arrow Financial Services, who closed shop in 2011. It is my understanding that they sent out the 1099-C's in October of 2011 way late from the IRS rule of 1/31/11. Why is it ok if they don't follow the ruling dates? Secondly, I do not have a mortgage, or credit card debt (paid off monthly) and I typically only use 1-2 credit cards. I have had ZERO debt from lendors, CC's and Mortgage and student loans for the past 20 years. Is their a statute of limitations on collecting credit card debt? My credit report shows no such company listed as collections account and the remainder of my credit report shows only positive standing. Can someone shed some light on this for me? I would be great full! Thank you!

To TAX PRO RICH: those who are paid adequate wages don't need refundable credits!

It is funny how it is the IRS's fault. Congress passes confusing, almost indiscernible laws that conflict with other sections of the code, refundable credits that create an environment for the IRS ATM to dispense money to any identity thief with a name and social security number, and continues to make retroactive changes that must be programmed in to systems that are older than anything used in public accounting firms today. There are some crazy IRS agents, yes, but thankfully in my experience, that does seem to be the exception, not the rule.

When will our government ever stop with the social engineering and transfers of wealth from the producers of income to the non-produucers? I have had it with so-called refundable credits for the low income only which go only to people for practically no other reason than that they are poor or have children. The rest of us "deserve" these credits, too, but if our income level is too high, we are "phased out" of the credit. What's this all about? Is it true we are all now a socialist stater?

I can say honestly this is the first year I have not enjoyed my job. I have my own business and very loyal clients. I am very diligent in preparing returns and follow the rules. But the IRS I know has a job to do but they are becoming less human and acting as if they are gods. Everybody's cicumstances are different and the fraud in the system is unbelievable. But there are honest taxpayers out there and they should not have to suffer the stereotyping because others decide the skirt the system. I don't know what the solution is, but making us as preparers jump through hoops and scare us in not the way to go about it. There are many of us out there that are honest and do the right thing. Or does the IRS look at us all as thieves? I guess trust went out with the Reagan era, its a shame that citizens who pay their share and us who prepare their returns will have to work harder to show we are honest. Such a shame.

RETURNING TO TAX PREPARATION IN MY FIRST YEAR OF BUSINESS AS TAXLADYX.COM I FOUND STRANGE TAX LAWS, LARGE ACCOUNTING FIRMS SETTLING THEIR FRAUD CASES, CPA'S AND OTHER TAX PROFESSIONALS SKIRTING THE LAW, AND COMPUTER FAUX PAS THAT COST ME THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN TIME LOST! THIS IS ONE HUNDRED YEARS OUR ANNIVERSARY OF THE TAX SYSTEM? WELL LET'S TRY TO REGAIN SOMETHING CALLED CONSISTENCY AT LEAST???THROW IN SOME OLD TIME ETHICS, AND LET'S GET ON TO JUST MAKING HONEST MISTAKES!!!!!

MY FORTE IS WORKING WITH THE MILLIONS WHO OWE BACK TAXES AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE SOME NEGOTIATION AND GET THESE COLD CASES OFF THE IRS BOOKS AND MOVE FORWARD. SOMETIMES I RECEIVE A GOOD AGENT RESPONSE AND THEY GENUINELY WANT TO GIVE THE FRESH START THE OIC OFFERS, BUT GENERALLY SPEAKING I RECEIVE SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO FIGHT TO THE BITTER END. AND I HAD A NEPHEW WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE THE IRS IS STILL AFTER HIM..THE ESTATE ATTORNEY HAS BEEN PAID AND NOTHING HAPPENED. I DIDN'T GET TO HANDLE HIS CASE, HE PREFERRED TO KEEP SILENT, SOME KEEP THE IRS IN A PRIVACY CLOSET IN FEAR.. AFTER GRUDGING, GRUELING, AND OFTEN TIMES BEING HUNG UP ON AFTER AWAITING HOURS FOR MY AGENT, I TAKE TO THE FORTE THAT HEALS ME FOR THE NEXT DAY'S JOURNEY, THE JACUZZI AND FOOT MASSAGE!

I FEEL FOR TAXPAYER AND AGENTS. BOTH ARE TROUBLESOME TODAY.

WHAT ABOUT THE TAX PREPARER, I MAY TAKE OFF FOR A MID DAY MASSAGE!

AND NO I DON'T LET GYM MEMBERSHIPS BECOME MEDICAL EXPENSES, BUT I DON'T FEEL A FAMILY IN MEXICO SHOULD GIVE CREDITS IN THE WAY OF $$ TO ANYONE HERE. EITHER WE GIVE IT TO ALL PEOPLE WHO HAVE FAMILY LIVING EVERYWHERE, TRULY A GLOBAL GESTURE, OR WE MAKE IT AMERICAN ON AMERICAN SOIL ONLY. NOW THAT CHILD TAX CREDIT IS A CROCK AIN'T IT? HEY WHAT ABOUT QUALIFYING RELATIVE AND MEDICAL EXPENSES FOR THE GROWING POPULATION BABY BOOMERS, THE AGED? LET'S ALLOW ANYONE WORKING IN US A CREDIT IF THEY TAKE CARE OF THEIR PARENTS REGARDLESS OF THEIR NATIONALITY OR RESIDENCE? OK THEN MAKE IT AMERICANS ON AMERICAN SOIL ONLY!!! REWARD THE CHILD WHO CARES FOR THE AGED PARENT!!

OFF TO PREPARE A FEW MORE RETURNS. AND TO CALL THE AGENCY ON BEHALF OF THE TAXPAYER.
