New York CPAs Elect Richard E. Piluso as President

The New York State Society of CPAs installed Richard E. Piluso as president at the society’s 114th Annual Election and Meeting and Dinner on Thursday.

Piluso is a retired vice president of internal audit for Loews Corp., and has been a member of the NYSSCPA since 1968. He lives in New Providence, N.J.

“This year, I would like to dedicate myself and the resources of the NYSSCPA to letting our members know what great value they receive out of their membership,” Piluso said. “I would like to expand and enhance the representation of minorities in the profession and in the leadership roles in our profession. I want all legislators to know there are 30,000 New York CPAs who stand ready to be a part of the legislative process as it pertains to tax and business legislation as well as to offer our expertise in any fiscal issues where we can serve government in the same way we serve our business and individual clients every day as trusted advisors.”

Piluso has served as president-elect, vice president and secretary/treasurer, treasurer at the NYSSCPA over the years and as a member of its board of directors and Executive Committee.  He received the Outstanding CPA in Industry Award in 1998. 

During his professional career, he chaired many NYSSCPA committees, including most recently the Quality Enhancement Policy Committee and the Industry Outreach Task Force. He has also chaired the Finance, Public Relations, Industry Oversight and Promoting CPA Careers committees; and served as a member of the Advertising, Awards, Committee Operations, Community Affairs, Hospitality Industry, Government, Education and Industry Oversight, Minority Group Recruitment and Equal Opportunity committees.

His service extended to NYSSCPA committees that targeted cooperative relationships with other groups, including the financial media, government officers, the securities industry, the New York State Bar Association, and commercial credit grantors.  He was also active with the Industry Issues and Strategic Planning task forces.  Piluso has served as a member of the Bankers and Other Credit Grantors Committee for the NYSSCPA Manhattan/Bronx Chapter.

“As I go into my year as president,” said Piluso, “I would like to express how much my life has been enriched by the large number of CPAs I have had the privilege of serving with at both the NYSSCPA and the AICPA.”

A member of the American Institute of CPAs, Piluso has served as a member of its Governing Council and board of directors as well as the chairman of the board’s Finance Committee. He currently a member of the AICPA’s Board of Examiners, providing monitoring and oversight for the formulation and administration of the Uniform CPA exam. He received the AICPA’s Gold Medal for Distinguished Service, its highest honor.

During his 29 years at Loews, he also headed their purchasing council, supervised corporate travel and mergers and acquisition diligence. Prior to Loews, he was a member of the audit team at Haskins & Sells (the predecessor of Deloitte) and worked at Amerada Hess for four years as corporate controller, handling all financial reporting.

Piluso is secretary/treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of City Meals on Wheels, a charitable organization dedicated to helping the elderly in New York City, and a member of the board of trustees of the Central Atlantic States YMCA Youth in Government programs.

He is a graduate of Pace University. He and his wife, Loretta have three sons, Jeffrey, Steven and Michael and two grandsons, Christopher and Charles.
