AICPA Announces 2012 Elijah Watt Sells Award Winners

The American Institute of CPAs announced the 39 winners of the 2012 Elijah Sells Award, given to outstanding performers on the uniform CPA examination.

Of the more than 92,000 candidates that sat for the exam last year, those recognized obtained a cumulative average score above 95.50 across all four sections of the CPA exam, completed testing during the 2012 calendar year, and passed all four sections on their first attempt.

“On behalf of the AICPA, I would like to congratulate this year’s winners on their outstanding performance on the CPA Examination and wish them the best of luck as they continue their careers in the accounting profession,” said Craig Mills, AICPA vice president of examinations, in a statement.

Named for Elijah Watt Sells, who died in 1924 and was one of the country’s first CPAs under the provision of a New York state law enacted in 1896, the award was established by the AICPA in 1923. Sells, a leader in advancing professional education in accounting, was also active in the establishment of the AICPA and a founder of New York University’s School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance.
