Georgia CPAs Elect New Chairmen

The Georgia Society of CPAs has elected Terry Parker to serve as the 2014-2015 chair of the GSCPA, and Lowell Mooney to serve as chair-elect, leading a membership of nearly 14,000 CPAs across the state of Georgia.

During his term as GSCPA chair, Parker will focus on leveraging technology to improve professional learning experiences, promoting GSCPA’s tradition of member involvement, and ensuring the successful transfer of the Georgia State Board of Accountancy from the Office of the Secretary of State to the State Accounting Office.

“The transition of the State Board of Accountancy is an important, upcoming change for CPAs in the state of Georgia,” Parker said in a statement. “This move will provide greater independence and operational effectiveness for our State Board.”

Parker, a partner at Clifton, Lipford, Hardison & Parker LLC in Macon, has been a member of GSCPA since 1989. An active member of the Society, Parker has served on the GSCPA’s board of directors, the board of the GSCPA’s Middle Georgia Chapter, the Educational Foundation and a number of committees. In addition to his service to the GSCPA, Parker is also a trustee for the Georgia Federal Tax Conference and a member of the Florida Institute of CPAs.

Parker has worked in public accounting both on the national and local level. He specializes in taxation, which includes the areas of corporate, partnership and individual taxation, as well as taxes related to nonprofits, trusts, gifts, estates and retirement plans. He has also represented individuals and businesses before the Internal Revenue Service, the Georgia Department of Revenue and the Florida Department of Revenue. He holds CPA licenses in both Georgia and Florida.

Parker is a native of Statesboro, and earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and his master’s degree in taxation from the University of Georgia.

Mooney, a professor of accounting and former director of the School of Accountancy at Georgia Southern University, was elected this month at the Society’s Annual Convention in San Francisco.

A GSCPA member for the past 26 years, Mooney has a lengthy history of service to the Georgia Society of CPAs. He is a former GSCPA Council and member of the board of directors. He has served as president of the GSCPA’s Southeast Georgia Chapter and as president of the Educational Foundation, in addition to serving on numerous committees and task forces.

Mooney is also a Certified Management Accountant, Chartered Global Management Accountant and Certified Financial Manager. He is a member of both the American Institute of CPAs and the Institute of Management Accountants.

Mooney has received numerous awards for his teaching, research and service activities, including the Georgia Society of CPAs’ Outstanding Accounting Educator Award, the Eugene Bishop Award for Sustained Excellence, and the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Advisor Award at Georgia Southern University.

Mooney holds a doctorate degree in accounting with a minor in management information systems from the University of Georgia. At Georgia Southern, he teaches accounting principles, management accounting and accounting information systems at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
