CFP Board updates exam to include new federal tax law

The Certified Financial Planner Board announced on Tuesday that the CFP Exam will soon incorporate the new federal tax law, starting with the November 2018 exam.

The change aims to ensure CFP professionals stay up to date on evolving topics and can serve the public in a timely manner.

“Given the breadth of changes under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, we believe it is important for the public to have candidates for CFP certification tested on the new law as quickly as possible,” said John Loper, the CFP Board’s managing director for professional practice, in a statement. “We know that taxes are an important part of developing a financial plan. Equipping future CFP professionals with the latest information will help them serve their clients.”

The AICPA also announced similar changes to include the new tax law in its Uniform CPA Examination, with its new tests to begin in January 2019.

The July 2018 CFP Exam will mark the last examination featuring the 2017 tax law. To sit for the exam, candidates must have completed a course of study from a CFP Board Registered Program. The education verification deadline is June 12, 2018.
