More than 122 million returns were e-filed during this year in what the IRS calls a “milestone” for e-filing.
Among filing results in 2013:
- The IRS received more than 45.2 million returns from those who prepared and e-filed their own returns on home computers, up from 43.2 million a year earlier, an increase of 4.6 percent.
- E-filed returns from tax professionals increased 1.2 percent to a total of more than 77 million returns.
- Whether self-prepared or completed by a preparer, 91 percent of all returns filed by individuals are prepared on computers using tax prep software.
Among other findings during the year:
- The service processed 147,223,000 returns this year, 61,000 fewer than in 2012.
- The IRS issued more than 109 million refunds worth almost $300 billion.
- The number of total refunds dropped to 109,261,000, a fall of 0.9 percent.
- Refunds averaged $2,744, down $50 from 2012.
- Almost 77 percent of refund recipients receive their refunds through direct deposit. Direct deposit refunds averaged $2,925, a drop of $56 from 2012.
- IRS.gov has been accessed more than 430 million times, up 23.8 percent over this time in 2012.
