IAESB Adopts Strategy to Support Revised Education Standards for Accountants

The International Accounting Education Standards Board has issued a new plan to support the adoption and implementation of the recently revised International Education Standards for accountants.

The IAESB’s 2014-2016 Strategy and Work Plan is intended to help International Federation of Accountants member bodies, regulators, employers, academics, and students. The new standards aim to improve the quality of professional accounting education worldwide, and enhance the competence and judgment of accountants.

In upholding its public interest mandate, the IAESB, which operates under the auspices of IFAC, is pursuing several strategic initiatives, including promulgating a series of high-quality standards and other publications reflecting good practice in the education, development, and assessment of professional accountants. The IAESB is also promoting the adoption and implementation of the revised International Education Standards, developing education benchmarks for measuring the implementation of the IES; and periodically reviewing the need for further revisions to any of the IES, or for developing additional standards.

“By continuing to enhance standards in international accounting education, we are contributing to the improvement of the professional competence and skills of professional accountants,” said IAESB chair Peter Wolnizer in a statement last Wednesday. “The aim of the 2014-2016 IAESB Strategy and Work Plan is to support the development of high-quality professional education programs by providing guidance to implement the existing requirements.”

As a result of these strategic initiatives, the IAESB has identified several work priorities, including setting and maintaining IES and considering the need for additional IES; supporting adoption and implementation of the revised IESs; and assessing the impact of the IES by conducting a baseline study and a post-implementation review.

The direction of further 2014-2016 activities will be based on the results of these three work priorities, according to Wolnizer.
