CALIFORNIA

The California Society of CPAs broke ground on its new headquarters at 1710 Gilbreth in Burlingame. The building at that location was occupied primarily by the American Heart Association, which will become a tenant of CalCPA when renovations are completed next fall. (See photo at left, from left to right: CEO Loretta Doon; board secretary / treasurer Kathryn Johnson; first vice chair Andrew Mintzer; former chair Andrea Cope; immediate past chair Tim Good; and chair Jennifer Ziegler.) … Eighteen management, staff and family members of HMWC CPAs & Business Advisors, Tustin, volunteered on September 19 to help clean-up the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve as part of the statewide "California Coastal Cleanup Day." HMWC volunteers helped collect the trash and recyclables throughout the day. … LSL (formerly Lance, Sull & Lunghard LLP), Brea, has joined PrimeGlobal, an association of independent accounting firms.

CONNECTICUT

Marcum LLP and the Connecticut Technology Council presented the 8th Annual Marcum Tech Top 40 Awards on September 24, honoring the fastest growing technology companies in Connecticut. A full list of winners is available here.

 

ITALY

Baker Tilly International has admitted 14 specialised tax firms to its network. Of the 14, 12 are members of the Synergia Consulting Group network with coverage in Alba, Ancona, Bologna, Catania, Florence, Genova, Modena, Naples, Rome, Turin, Treviso and Verona. Of the remaining two firms, Studio Lobis is based in Milan and provides niche services to German clients, while Studio MMVN & Associati also provides coverage in Milan advising Italian and French clients.

 

MARYLAND

Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell PC’S 2nd Annual School Supplies Drive resulted in a 66 percent increase in donations over last year, netting 50 stuffed backpacks plus an assortment of additional school supplies, which are distributed through the Housing Opportunities Community Partners.

 

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Albert Stowe CPA PLLC, Portsmouth, will combine with Baker Newman Noyes effective Nov. 1, 2015. All the employees will relocate to BNN’s new office at Pease International Tradeport at 100 Arboretum Drive in Portsmouth. Founder Toby Stowe will become a tax principal of BNN.

TEXAS

Ryan, a leading global tax services firm, has acquired EnerTax Consultants LP, a severance tax consulting firm based in Houston. EnerTax partners Matthew Travis, Sloan Smalley and Jonathon Travis will join Ryan as principals. Travis will also assume the role of Ryan severance tax practice Leader. … Better Bookkeepers Inc., The Woodlands, has expanded into the Austin area. The Austin office will be run by senior bookkeeper Lori Szyperski.

VIRGINIA

The National Society of Accountants, Arlington, presented a number of awards at its 70th Annual Convention: Karen Hawkins, the recently retired director of the Internal Revenue Service Office of Professional Responsibility was named Person of the Year; Joseph Santoro, of Wolfeboro, N.H., was named Accountant of the Year; Joan LeValley, owner of JCL & Co. in Park Ridge, Ill., received the Distinguished Service Award; the North Carolina Society of Accountants was named Affiliated State Organization of the Year; Curtis Banks Lee, of Raleigh, N.C., received the Norma Kraus Award, as the best state director of the year; the Arkansas Society of Accountants and its publication, ASA News, and the Pennsylvania Society of Tax & Accounting Professionals and its publication, Pennsylvania Accountant, received the Keith Billings Memorial Awards; Bob McKinley, of Spokane, Wash., received the National Editorial Award; Joseph Santoro received the Golden Quill Award; the Public Accountants Society of Colorado and the California Society of Tax Consultants received Best ASO Website Awards; and Mark Nelson, of Nelson Tax Accounting in Milwaukee, received the Outstanding Tax Talker Award. … Piascik, Richmond, has joined PrimeGlobal, an association of independent accounting firms.
