Singer Lauryn Hill, a former member of the popular rap group, the Fugees, has been charged with failing to file tax returns on more than $1.8 million in income.

Hill, who resides in South Orange, N.J., was charged by prosecutors with three counts of failing to file tax returns for calendar years 2005, 2006, and 2007. She is scheduled to appear on the charges before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael A. Shipp on June 29.

The 37-year-old singer gained fame as a member of the Fugees in the 1990s and then launched a solo career with the Grammy-winning album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” in 1998. She has also appeared on-screen, co-starring with Whoopi Goldberg in “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” in 1993.

Hill owns and operates four corporations in addition to being an entertainer: Creations Music, Inc., Boogie Tours, Inc., L.H. Productions 2001, Inc. and Studio 22, Inc. Her primary source of income is royalties from the recording and film industries. During the three years she failed to file tax returns, Hill received more than $1.6 million in income, according to prosecutors.

The counts with which Hill is charged each carry a maximum potential penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. Her attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Another former member of the Fugees, Wyclef Jean, has also had tax problems personally and with the charity he ran to aid Haitian earthquake victims (see Wyclef Jean Hit with IRS Tax Liens of $2.1 Million and Wyclef Jean Hires RSM McGladrey).
