Former NFL QB Ken Stabler Owes IRS $265,000

Former quarterback Ken Stabler has been ordered by a federal judge to pay $265,000, plus interest, to the Internal Revenue Service to settle his tax debts.

Judge Charles Butler Jr. ruled last week that the former NFL star owes $125,685 in unpaid taxes for 1999 to 2001. His speaking engagement and consulting business, the Stabler Co., owes $134,166 in unpaid taxes for 1998 to 2000, along with a civil penalty of $5,509, according to the Associated Press.

Stabler’s attorney told the Mobile Press-Register that he plans to negotiate a payment plan with the IRS. He has already sold his house to help pay off his tax debts and will need to make monthly payments, which is mostly earned now from appearing at occasional NFL events.

Stabler, 66, played for the Oakland Raiders from 1970 to 1979, the Houston Oilers from 1980 to 1981, and the New Orleans Saints from 1982 to 1984. In 1977, he led the Raiders to a 32-14 win in Super Bowl XI over the Minnesota Vikings. He played in college for the University of Alabama, recruited in 1964 by legendary coach Bear Bryant.

After retiring from the playing field, Stabler joined CBS as a color commentator for NFL telecasts and later for radio broadcasts of Alabama games.
