New Concur tool tracks travel, creates line item expense

Concur, an SAP company that provides travel, expense and invoice management solutions, has released a new automated tool that tracks mileage data for the purpose of expense reporting. Called Concur Expense Smart Drive, it integrates into the Concur mobile app so distance tracking and expense reimbursement is completed automatically.

The tool uses the GPS on a user’s phone to track mileage and create an expense line item for a trip. Tracking begins when the technology senses the user is driving a motorized vehicle, but users can choose to have the function continually run in the background or activate it only at certain times, i.e., when a trip is being completed for business purposes.

Concur Expense Smart Drive recognizes the country in which it is operating, and calculates the correct expense based on local information such as gas prices. The tool is also able to intake information such as the type of vehicle and numbers of passengers in the car to aid in accurate reimbursement.

“In 2016, Concur processed $2.27 billion in ground transportation reimbursement,” Robb Nielsen, vice president of global product experience at Concur, said in a statement. “Mileage tracking is one of the top ten items expensed, yet it often requires business travelers to manually input estimates with no documentation — costing business traveler’s time and leaving substantial margin for error.”
