CALIFORNIA

Kullen Birkeland named office managing partner of Grant Thornton’s Southern California practice. Birkeland will oversee the growth and operations of the Los Angeles, Irvine and San Diego offices. … Hemming Morse LLP, a national accounting firm focused on forensic and financial consulting and financial and compliance auditing of employee benefit plans, has appointed a new management committee comprised of partners Greg McKinnon, Jim Andersen, Alex Miller, Greg Regan and Susan Thompson. McKinnon takes over the role of firm wide managing partner following Colin Johns’ five-year tenure. Johns will continue with the firm in his forensic and financial consulting practice. Paul Regan will remain in his capacity as firm chairman.

MARYLAND

Brent Solomon, CohnReznick Advisory Group partner and Valuation Advisory National Director, has been appointed by the Alliance of Merger & Acquisition Advisors as conference chairman for its summer and winter conferences. As conference chairman, Brent will assist the AM&AA and conference attendees in extracting the highest possible value from both conferences. Attendees will include middle-market business owners, C-level executives, leading private equity investors, senior and mezzanine lenders, CPAs, attorneys, business valuators, consultants, and other advisors.

Prior to his experience in accounting, he spent 13 years in the investment and commercial banking industry. He specializes in litigation support, business valuation, forensic investigation, expert report and trial testimony preparation.

Christopher Cacace has been named partner-in-charge at Marks Paneth LLP. Cacace will work in the firm’s theater, media and entertainment group. Cacace has been with Marks Paneth and its predecessor firms since 1982. Cacace graduated magna cum laude and holds a Bachelor's of Business Administration in Public Accounting from Baruch College of The City University of New York. He is a member of the board of advisers of the MCC Theater Company and a member of the Broadway League, the American Institute of CPAs and the New York State Society of CPAs. SOUTH CAROLINA

Donald Burkett, a CPA in West Columbia, S.C., was selected as the NASBA’s Nominating Committee nominee. Once elected by the membership at the 2014 Annual Meeting, the 2014-15 Vice Chair will automatically accede to the office of Chair at NASBA’s 2015 Annual Meeting.

WASHINGTON

Kelly Rancourt has been promoted to audit and assurance manager at Clark Nuber. Jennifer Korten, a tax principal at the firm, was recently appointed to Washington State University’s National Board of Advisors as a member of the Accounting Advisory Board.
