Sheri Fiske Schultz, a director of litigation support and business valuation services for Fiske & Company, recently received the FICPA’s “Women to Watch” Experienced Leader Award. This prestigious award, which is given in conjunction with the American Institute of CPAs, recognizes outstanding women who are shaping the FICPA and the accounting profession. … Denney Holloway has been promoted to tax senior associate at CBIZ MHM LLC. Liz VanBroekhoven, Chris Nix and Jessica Hettinger were promoted to managers in the assurance department of CBIZ MHM LLC the Tampa Bay office. VanBroekhoven earned her Bachelors of Science from the University of South Florida in 2009. She joined CBIZ MHM in 2010. She has extensive experience in assurance, transactional and advisory services. Her industry experience includes manufacturing, auto dealerships, and not for profits. She has worked on SEC-registrants, privately held companies, and not for profits with a focus on technical accounting issues and complex transactions. Nix earned his Master of Accountancy from the University of South Florida and prior to joining CBIZ MHM in 2013, he spent 3 years in public accounting with Deloitte, in Tampa. Hettinger earned her Master’s in Accountancy and Bachelors of Science Degree in Accountancy from the University of South Florida prior to joining CBIZ MHM in 2007. During a brief break from public accounting, Hettinger worked for one of the largest public companies in the Tampa Bay area in a US Operations financial reporting role. She has extensive experience with a wide range of audit, compliance and advisory services. Her industry experience includes real estate, manufacturing and distribution, broker dealer, dental management services, employee benefit plans, and financial services. She has served both SEC-registrants and privately held companies with a focus on technical accounting issues and complex transactions. ... Lynn Calhoun has been named BDO USA LLP new chief financial officer. Calhoun, a partner, was previously the firm's director of finance. He succeeds Howard Allenberg as CFO. After serving in various national leadership roles over the past 18 years, Allenberg is stepping down from full-time duties, but will continue to assist the CEO and the national leadership team on special projects. This appointment is effective July 1.

GEORGIA

Carlye Dooley, a principal and sector leader in not-for-profit tax services at Windham Brannon, was appointed to a board position for The Study Hall, a childcare learning center in the greater Peoplestown community. As the newly appointed Treasurer, Dooley will be responsible for cash flow management and fiscal year budgeting as well as the preparation and presentation of monthly financial statements to the Board.

ILLINOIS

Grant Thornton LLP appointed a new Senior Leadership Team following the announcement earlier this month of J. Michael McGuire’s appointment as chief executive officer (CEO)-elect, succeeding Stephen Chipman on Jan. 1, 2015. In order to help facilitate the CEO transition and prepare for the start of the firm’s fiscal year in August, these appointments are effective immediately.

INDIANA

Nick Hopkins, a partner and director of tax services at sponsel CPA Group, has been named to the Center Grove Education Foundation Board of Directors.

MASSACHUSETTS

Joshua LaPan, partner at Shepherd & Goldstein LLP, has recently been appointed to the board of directors at Worcester PIF, Inc. as treasurer. LaPan has been a member of Worcester PIF, Inc. since October, 2013. A resident of Holden, LaPan has been with Shepherd & Goldstein for 17 years, and was promoted to partner earlier this year

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Kirk Leoni, managing director of Nathan Wechsler & Company PA, was presented with the first NH Board Impact Award, one of the NH Nonprofit Impact Awards for 2014, in recognition of his work with nonprofit organizations across the state. The award was given at Nonprofit Impact Night, an event honoring individuals and nonprofits that have made outstanding contributions to their communities, held at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord on May 22— a day proclaimed by Governor Hassan as New Hampshire’s "Nonprofit Day.”

NEW JERSEY

The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants has elected Joseph Falbo Jr. of Grand Island, N.Y. as president-elect. His one-year term began on June 1, 2014.. … Deanna Flores, a 22-year veteran of the Investment Management industry, has been appointed National Tax Industry Leader for Registered Funds and Investment Advisors, for KPMG. … The AICPA has named a new technical director for the AICPA Center for Plain English Accounting, a resource hub for local and regional CPA firms seeking detailed, clearly explained guidance on complex accounting and assurance issues. Thomas Groskopf succeeds the late Dr. Tom Ratcliffe, founder of Plain-English Accounting, LLC, an advisory service acquired by the AICPA last fall and expanded into the CPEA. Groskopf continues as a CPA with Barnes, Dennig & Co., a regional firm with offices in Ohio and Kentucky. He is a member of the Private Company Council, which works with the Financial Accounting Standards Board to determine if and how U.S. GAAP should be adapted for private companies. Groskopf has also served on the AICPA's PCPS Technical Issues Committee, including one year as chair of its accounting subcommittee. As a client engagement partner, he brings valuable insight and extensive experience to private company accounting issues, as well as expertise in audit, review, compilation and attestation services. … Stephen Ebinger has been elected as president of the Long Island New York chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association. Ebinger is a partner in the Jericho, NY office of CohnReznick LLP. … The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants recently elected Timothy Hedley, CPA, Ph.D, of Manhattan as a vice president. Hedley is a partner in KMPG LLP’s forensic practice, where he serves as global leader for the firm’s fraud risk management initiative. Hedley’s one-year term began June 1.

Bobbi Jo Lazarus, who is a senior tax manager at Elliott Davis, has been named one of 2014’s “Women to Watch” by the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.

OHIO

Tom Groskopf, a director at Barnes Dennig, will serve as the new Technical Director of the AICPA's Center for Plain English Accounting. The CPEA is the national accounting and auditing resource center for local and regional firms. It provides knowledge through publications, alerts and webinars on accounting, auditing and quality control standards.

PENNSYLVANIA

SmartCEO Power Player Awards has named ParenteBeard partner Howard Heyman, a key leader on the firm’s small business team, as a finalist for the accountant of the year category. As a finalist, Heyman will be honored on stage at the awards celebration on Thursday, September 11, 2014, at the National Museum of American Jewish History in Center City Philadelphia.

UNITED KINGDOM

The Monitoring Board has approved the appointment of Jin Liqunas a Trustee of the IFRS Foundation. Jin’s appointment will begin on 01 July 2014 and will expire on 31 December 2016, renewable once for a further three year term. Jin Liqun is Chairman of China International Capital Corporation Limited and a member of the foreign policy advisory committee of the Chinese Foreign Ministry. He also serves as Honorary Chairman of the International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds. ... The Greater China Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales has honored Jonathan Geldart, Grant Thornton Executive Director: Markets Development, for a second consecutive year with a special award for services to the ICAEW in China
