ARIZONA

The American Institute of CPAs has selected Gary Scopes as the recipient of the AICPA Medal of Honor. Scopes was presented the award at the spring meeting of the AICPA governing Council. Diane Cornwell picked up the 2013 Public Service Award for Individuals from the AICPA.

COLORADO

Kristina Kesselring, who is a manager at BKD CPAs & Advisors, has earned the Personal Financial Specialist certification from the AICPA.

CONNECTICUT

John H. Schuyler, a partner in the Hartford, Conn., office of Marcum LLP, has been appointed by Governor Dannel Malloy to serve as a licensee member of the Connecticut State Board of Accountancy.

FLORIDA

Mark Howard, senior vice president and chief audit executive for the United Services Automobile Association (USAA), was appointed chairman of The Institute of Internal Auditors’ Financial Services Advisory Board, a group that advises The IIA on services and learning opportunities for financial services industry members. Howard succeeds Scott White, vice president of M&M Consulting, LLC, who led the board for eight years and was instrumental in spearheading creation of free FSAB webinars and The IIA’s Financial Services SmartBrief, a monthly e-newsletter providing information relevant to financial services auditors.

KANSAS

Dan Powers has been named office managing partner of Grant Thornton LLP’s Wichita practice. Most recently, Powers served as the tax practice leader of the Grant Thornton Shared Services Center in Bangalore, India.

MAINE

Brett Seekins, senior manager in the Baker Newman Noyes Healthcare Management Consulting Practice, was recently appointed to the newly formed Cape Elizabeth Town Council Senior Citizens Advisory Committee. As the director of the long term care and senior living practice at Baker Newman Noyes, Seekins will work with a team of seven, which includes three of the communities’ seniors.

Hector Alvarez, Grecia Sandoval and Michael Shakoordokht have joined DeLeon & Stang CPAs.

NEVADA

The American Institute of CPAs has awarded Vern Hoven and Sharon Kreider with the 2014 Sidney Kess Award for Excellence in Continuing Education at its Conference on Tax Strategies for the High-Income Individual in Las Vegas. Hoven is head of Vern Hoven Tax Seminars in Seattle, Wash. Kreider is owner of Kreider CPA in Sunnyvale, Calif.

John Dugan has joined CohnReznick Wealth Management LLC, an affiliate of CohnReznick LLP, as director of insurance. Dugan will oversee the insurance operations for the Firm with a focus on expanding and deepening the Firm’s client relationships by leveraging insurance products and services. … Jeffrey Stier, an executive director in the Advisory Customer Practice of Ernst & Young LLP, has been named to Consulting magazine's Top 25 Consultants list for 2014. Stier was selected for "Excellence in Media & Communication," a new award category, for his role in helping clients re-imagine their businesses by putting purpose, digital agility, and trustworthiness at the core of everything they do. … Steven Marcus, managing partner of Gettry Marcus, has been recognized by Long Island Business News, as an Outstanding CEO for 2014.

NORTH CAROLINA

Tim Koch has joined Cherry Bekaert as partner, Michael Coppa joined as senior manager, and Brian Dermott as manager. The three will work out of the Charlotte office in the transaction advisory services practice.

WASHINGTON

Joseph Maugeri has been promoted to managing director of marketing and corporate relations at Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. The newly expanded role will seek to increase the number of CFP professionals while continuing to strengthen and enhance the organization's connections within the financial services industry. … Mariya Beynenson and Brian Hayes have joined Clark Nuber, Bellevue, as an accounting and consulting services associates. Valerie Sias has joined the firm as marketing coordinator and Michelle Spruch joined as an audit intern.

WISCONSIN

Grant Thornton LLP named Jeff French national managing partner of the firm’s Consumer and Industrial Products practice and leader of its Manufacturing practice. French will succeed Wally Gruenes, who became the office managing partner of the firm’s Dallas. Most recently, French served as leader of the firm’s Wisconsin Audit Services. French has acted as the lead service partner for numerous clients, and has experience serving as the primary business adviser to chief executive officers and boards of directors. He has worked with a broad range of public and private clients, from startups to large corporations, focusing on audit and financial reporting, internal controls and related matters, acquisition strategies, due diligence, operations and productivity improvement reviews, public offerings and international statutory audits.
