Youngstown State University announces student-athlete scholarship

Ohio's Youngstown State University and its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced this week that the school has created the Dan and Sharon Wathen Scholarship as part of its YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.

The scholarship honors Dan and Sharon Wathen, who came to Youngstown in 1976. Dan served as a head athletic trainer for the school through 2008, and Sharon, a former CPA, worked as a partner at local firm Thomas, Wathen & Ziegler, while also teaching accounting at YSU’s Williamson College of Business from 2010 to 2016.

The new scholarship will honor the pair's careers by supporting YSU student-athletes majoring in accounting going forward.

"We hope that our commitment to YSU over the years, both in the classroom and in the care for our student-athletes, will inspire others to give back as well,” the couple said in a statement. “We are honored to endow this scholarship and feel that giving back to future student-athletes is befitting of our love for Youngstown State University."

“Dan kept the training room running efficiently and his innovations in strength training really set YSU apart from other schools for years,” stated Paul McFadden, president of the YSU Foundation. “Both Dan and Sharon are tremendous people who have giving a lot of their personal time to the school. We are honored they have the resources to endow a scholarship and continue to have a positive impact on the lives of YSU student-athletes.”
