Staffing Solutions: Attracting and Retaining Talent; A Younger and Older Mentor

August 1, 2008

Joe Rotella, CTO of Delphia Consulting and speaker at the recent annual conference of the Association for Accounting Marketing in San Diego, makes it very easy to understand what it takes to attract and retain talent across the generations with his short summaries. For traditionalists, it is Work First; for Boomers, it is Live to Work; For Gen X, it is Work to Live; and for GenY, it is Live, Then Work.

YouTube is cited by Rotella as successfully used by firms, especially the video showcasing Adam Elkins, a former intern at PricewaterhouseCoopers, who is now in his first year as a tax associate there (www.youtube.com/watch?v=obWoZD5oRsY). Besides getting Elkins’s perspective, PwC’s director of campus recruiting describes the intern program in detail and points out that 85 percent of the interns end up with full-time positions. The video has been viewed 2,193 times.

Rotella also sites the results of a survey that indicates that a company’s Web site is the overwhelming Net source for new hires at 53 percent, while sites like Hot Jobs, CareerBuilder, and Monster were all each in the single digits.

He suggests that you have both an old and a younger mentor. He has found his younger mentor invaluable especially with regard to various aspects of technology, including text messaging and social networking as a means to troubleshoot a client’s problem.
