The above quote, loosely attributed to Chaucer, somberly encapsulates the past four-plus decades that Practical Accountant has proudly and capably served its readership.

Since its launch in 1968, it has distinguished itself within the public accounting profession, offering cogent insight and analysis on myriad subjects, along with a focus on practice management that today remains unmatched among its competition.

But one of the inarguable constants in any field is change. And sometimes change is necessary, no matter how sobering.

Unfortunately, the economic landscape is far different today than it was 41 years ago, and the publishing arena, like so many others, has been particularly impacted.

As a result, this will be the final issue of Practical Accountant, as it, along with its sibling Accounting Technology, will be merged into Accounting Today.

As you can imagine, this was not an easy decision; choices of this magnitude rarely are. Shuttering one of the news fixtures of the profession after so many years of distinguished service was painful on both a brand level and a personal one.

For the past 11 years, the publication flourished under the auspices of Howard Wolosky and Jeff Stimpson, whom I will not only miss as respected colleagues, but to both of whom I also extend my eternal gratitude for making my job as editorial director that much easier. I also want to thank Mary Ann Tasoulas for her copyediting expertise over the years.

Despite some turbulence, I see calmer waters ahead. The new incarnation of Accounting Today will incorporate the best elements of Practical Accountant and Accounting Technology, and unquestionably will be a stronger publication because of it.

In an era where most start-up publications fail within three years, the long and remarkable life of Practical Accountant is one that should be cheered. Loudly.
