Jackson Hewitt Teams with ExamMatrix for RTRP Exam Course

Parsippany, N.J.-based Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. has inked an agreement with Matrix Learning Inc. (known as ExamMatrix) to make the ExamMatrix Registered Tax Return Preparer Exam Review course available to some 25,000 Jackson Hewitt tax professionals in the U.S.

ExamMatrix has provided Jackson Hewitt’s training program with its IRS Enrolled Agent training course for six years. The Littleton, Colo.-based company also offers preparation training for the CPA, Certified Management Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, and Certified Systems Auditor exams.

Tax professionals must pass the IRS-mandated RTRP test by December 31, 2013, unless they are already a CPA, EA attorney, which are exempt from the new education and testing requirements because they already have separate requirements. Also exempt are non-signing preparers employed by law or accounting firms who are supervised by CPAs, attorneys or EAs, and those who do not prepare the Form 1040 series.

“The ExamMatrix course not only does a great job of teaching students the tax content tested on the RTRP exam, but it also is designed in a manner that makes the student a better test-taker,” said Barbara Jordan, chief learning officer of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, who added that Jackson Hewitt evaluated “various” RTRP test-review options.

“This unique feature is important for tax professionals who may have years of tax preparation experience but also may be years removed from having taken their last standardized certification exam,” she added.

The IRS has acknowledged that preparers may be anxious about having to take what for many preparers is the first test in many years (see "IRS's Williams: It's Test-Taking Time.")

“We are very pleased to have Jackson Hewitt choose us to fulfill this critical RTRP certification training need,” said Sean Mullen, chief executive officer of ExamMatrix. “ExamMatrix and Jackson Hewitt have had an excellent partnership.”

Jackson Hewitt has some 6,500 franchised and company-owned locations in the U.S., including 2,800 in Walmart stores nationwide, in the 2012 tax season, and offers an online tax preparation product.
