Dr. Randall S. Kroszner

Norman R. Bobins Professor of Economics

Randall S. Kroszner served as a Governor of the Federal Reserve System from March 2006 until January 2009. During his time as a member of the Federal Reserve Board, he chaired the committee on Supervision and Regulation of Banking Institutions and the committee on Consumer and Community Affairs. In these capacities, he took a leading role in developing responses to the financial crisis and in undertaking new initiatives to improve consumer protection and disclosure, including rules related to home mortgages and credit cards, and was director of NeighborWorks America. He represented the Fed on the Financial Stability Forum (now the Financial Stability Board), the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, and the Central Bank Governors of the American Continent. Dr. Kroszner chaired the working party of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), composed of deputy central bank governors and finance ministers, on the Promotion of Better International Payments Equilibrium. As a member of the Fed Board, he was also a voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee. Before becoming a member of the Fed Board, Dr. Kroszner was a professor of economics at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and assumed the Norman R. Bobins professorship after his return. Dr. Kroszner was Director of the George J. Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State. He served as editor of the Journal of Law & Economics. He has been an associate editor of a number of other journals and served as a director at the National Association for Business Economics. He is currently a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and serves on the Committees on Economic Statistics and on Economic Education of the American Economics Association. Dr. Kroszner is a widely published author, and his research interests include the regulation of financial institutions, conflicts of interest, monetary economics, international financial crises, Great Depression, corporate governance, debt restructuring and bankruptcy, and political economy. His paper on corporate ownership won the Brattle Prize for best corporate finance paper in the Journal of Finance. His book with Robert J. Shiller, Reforming U.S. Financial Markets: Reflections Before and Beyond Dodd-Frank (MIT Press, 2011), has recently been on the Washington Post’s Book World political bestsellers list.Dr. Kroszner was a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) from 2001 to 2003. While at the CEA, he was heavily involved in formulating the policy response to corporate governance scandals as well as in advising on a wide range of domestic and international issues, including banking and financial regulation, government-sponsored enterprises, pension reform, terrorism risk insurance, tax reform, currency crisis management and sovereign debt restructuring, the role of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and economic development. Dr. Kroszner has been a visiting scholar or visiting professor at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the IMF, American Enterprise Institute, London School of Economics, the Stockholm University, the Stockholm School of Economics, the Free University of Berlin, Germany, the University of Chicago Law School, and Yonsei University Korea. He is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Systemic Financial Resilience and is involved with Gates Foundation initiatives on promoting access to financial services for the poor in emerging market countries. Dr. Kroszner is a much sought-after commentator on economic, monetary, and regulatory issues and gives numerous speeches around the world. He is a frequent guest host on CNBC’s Squawk Box. His other media appearances include BBC Newsnight and Today, Bloomberg, Reuters, CNN, PBS Nightly Business Report, NBC Nightly News, and National Public Radio. He is widely quoted in the press, including the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Nikkei, Der Spiegel, Les Echos, China Daily, AP, Business Week, Fortune, and Forbes.Dr. Kroszner consults on economic, financial, and regulatory outlook and strategy to financial services firms and asset managers throughout the world. He has served on the Advisory Board of GETCO (a leading electronic trading and technology firm and NYSE Designated Market Maker) and serves on the Board of Directors of the Financial Management Association on the Board of Advisors of the Paulson Institute. Dr. Kroszner also chairs the University of Chicago’s committee on employee benefits. Dr. Kroszner received an Sc.B. (magna cum laude) in applied mathematics-economics (honors) from Brown University in 1984 and an M.A. (1987) and Ph.D. (1990) in economics, from Harvard University.
