Gary McAlum serves as Chief Security Officer of United Services Automobile Association. He joined USAA in February 2010 and his responsibilities include: Information Security & Privacy, Financial Crimes Management, Physical Security & Investigations, and Business Continuation. Prior to USAA, he served 25 years in the US Air Force and a short time with Deloitte & Touche, LLP.While in the Air Force, he was on the front line of cyberspace operations for the Department of Defense. Throughout his military career, he worked in a variety of leadership and staff positions within the communications and information technology career field including: telecommunications, satellite communications, deployed network operations, and information security. Gary was on the front line of cyberspace operations for the Department of Defense where he was a major figure in the establishment and evolution of the Joint Task Force Global Network Operations, the organization that was the focal point for the operation and security of DoD information systems and networks. During this time, he was frequently called upon to provide cyber threat insights to a wide variety of interagency forums, including the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, the President's National Cyber Study Group, and Congressional testimony. In addition, he worked extensively with government agencies to improve information sharing processes and operationalize new technologies.After retiring from the Air Force, he spent a short time with Deloitte & Touche where he co-authored Deloitte's global perspective, Cybersecurity: Everybody's Imperative and served on a Presidential task force that developed recommendations for a joint public-private sector cyber response capability.Gary holds a B.A. in Mathematics from The Citadel, an M.S. in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona, and an M.S. from the National Defense University. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), and has completed the Wharton Security Executive Development Program. He currently serves on the board of the Internet Security Alliance (ISA) where he contributed to the development of the “Cyber-Risk Handbook” that is promoted by the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD).
